NASA Space Technology for Nerve Regeneration?

In the early 1990’s, scientists at NASA were looking for ways to grow plants in space for research. After painstaking research and development, they settled on near-infrared light technology with LEDs.

These LEDs emit a red-light to promote plant growth in an otherwise inhospitable environment for nature.

It worked exactly as intended...and they were proud of their work. And that could have been the end of the story, they accomplished the mission they set out for…

But then the scientists who developed the technology discovered that it emitted the same wavelengths of light as the expensive lasers doctors used to remove brain tumors back here on earth. [1]

And a lightbulb went off.

Perhaps this portable, lightweight technology could have medical applications right here on earth...replacing expensive, bulky, and cumbersome laser systems used in operating rooms across the country.

Not only would it be easier to use, but it would save patients thousands of dollars.

And here’s where it gets exciting for folks dealing with nerve damage...

Further research uncovered even more applications of this technology for medical purposes.

In a two-year clinical trial on cancer patients undergoing bone marrow or stem cell transplants were given a far red/near infrared treatment for oral mucositis -- a common and extremely painful side effect of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. The trial concluded that there is a 96 percent chance that the improvement in pain of those in the high-risk patient group was the result of the HEALS treatment. [2]

Not only did further studies find that therapy with near-infrared technology helped with brain tumors, mouth sores, and more…

But they discovered that it also helps accelerate nerve regeneration in damaged nerves!

When your nerves are damaged - be it from physical trauma, underlying medical conditions, vitamin deficiencies, or something else - a fluid is produced.

This fluid - called chamber fluid - contains neurotrophic factors that accelerate nerve regeneration.

And in a study on near-infrared (a.k.a. Red Light) therapy on damaged nerves, researchers found that exposing the damaged nerves to red-light therapy for 1-hour a day improved nerve regeneration and increased antioxidation levels in the chamber fluid.

In the control group, antioxidation levels in the chamber fluid significantly decreased between the 3rd and 7th day…

But in the LED red-light therapy group, antioxidation levels didn’t decrease until 7 days.

Researchers concluded that “LED irradiation improved nerve regeneration and increased antioxidation levels in the chamber fluid. Therefore, we propose that antioxidation induced by LEDs may be conducive to nerve regeneration.” [3]

And other studies have reached similar conclusions:

Researchers at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Maryland concluded that “infrared light with optimized parameters promotes accelerated nerve regeneration and improved functional recovery in a surgically repaired peripheral nerve.” [4]

A 2017 study found that 808nm wavelength low near-infrared laser light at the level of the nerve can rapidly block pain transmission. A combination therapy is proposed to treat neuropathic pain with initial high irradiance/fluence rates for fast pain relief, followed by low irradiance/fluence rates for prolonged pain relief by altering chronic inflammation. [5]

A 2015 study on animals with right sciatic nerve injury found that postoperative red light therapy accelerated and potentialized the peripheral nerve regeneration process within 14 days. [6]

Option 1: Wrap

This easy-to-use wrap can be used on virtually any part of the body. Simply wrap around (or place on) the area afflicted with nerve damage. This versatile option allows you to reap the benefits of the near-infrared lights anywhere on your body - not just your feet.

Option 2: Slipper

These comfortable slippers can be worn for 30-60 mins a day to help the nerves in your feet. As the majority of our customers are dealing with nerve damage in the feet, this is a comfortable and convenient option to help alleviate nerve discomfort in the feet.
